Crash on Highway 17 kills van driver


One person died in an accident on Highway 17 in Stafford County.

The accident happened near the Fauquier County line.

From the Stafford Sheriff’s Office: At 7:38 am, MPs responded to a head-on collision in the Warrenton Road and Ashburn Lane area. Initial investigation revealed that a van had passed through the bulkhead and struck a northbound tractor-trailer.

The driver of the van was thrown from the vehicle and died of his injuries. The driver of the semi-trailer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The causeway remains closed while the investigation continues.

Expect the zipper to stay in place for the next four to five hours. Traffic is diverted onto Richland Road. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Route 17 is a popular road for semi-trailers. The north-south route connects highways 95 and 66.

Meanwhile, this morning on I-66, Virignia State Police were called in about a serious accident in Gainesville.

From the Virignia State Police: At 6:09 a.m. Monday (October 4), Virginia State Police responded to a crash involving two vehicles in Prince William County. The two vehicles collided in the westbound lanes of I-66 at Exit 43 / Gainesville. The driver of each vehicle was airlifted to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The accident is still under investigation.
