SOUTHFIELD, Mich.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Power management company Eaton has announced that its eMobility business has been selected to supply a 4-speed medium-duty electrified vehicle (EV) drivetrain to Proterra, a leading innovator in powertrain technology. electrification of commercial vehicles, for the company’s ProDrive transmission used at Proterra ZX5 electric transit buses.
“Our EV drivetrains have unmatched performance, delivering class-leading acceleration, power, range and durability,” said Julie Marshaus, New Product Launch Manager, ePowertrain, Eaton’s Vehicle Group. “The transmissions also have the ability to allow longer range due to efficiency gains.”
The medium-duty 4-speed transmission, which will be used in city buses in North America, solves the main problem with single-speed drives that have conflicting requirements for high efficiency at top speeds and increased torque at start-up and at low speed. The transmission is a lightweight countershaft gearbox with a torque capacity of up to 1,200 Nm (885 lb-ft) and electric shift control that allows manufacturers to use smaller and larger motors. effective.
Eaton’s 4-speed transmission features fine-pitch helical gears that provide smooth, quiet operation and a shift strategy designed to extend range and battery life. Road tests have shown a 20-30% improvement in fuel efficiency under normal driving conditions compared to a direct-drive transmission and a 10-15% improvement over a current solution at 2 speeds.
“Eaton has been in the hybrid driveline business for more than 15 years, and we have more than two billion miles of reliable hybrid drivetrain equipped truck and bus operation on the road,” Marshaus said. “Our 4-speed transmission provides uncompromising grade launch capability and features shift points to keep the electric motor operating in its most efficient region while considering vehicle handling and safety. .”
