HAL partners with Israel Aerospace Industries to convert civilian aircraft into multi-mission tanker transport aircraft

Under the pact, HAL will convert used civilian (passenger) aircraft into aerial refueling aircraft with cargo and transport capabilities, the company said in a statement Wednesday.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to convert civil (passenger) aircraft into Multi-Mission Transport Aircraft (MMTT) in India. Under the pact, HAL will convert second-hand civilian (passenger) aircraft into aerial refueling aircraft with cargo and transport capabilities, the Bengaluru-based company said in a statement on Wednesday. The move will provide India’s defense ecosystem with new capabilities and cost-effective solutions in the market, he said.

The MoU will facilitate HAL and IAI’s decades-long expertise in developing, manufacturing and producing advanced defense platforms, according to the release. The scope of the MoU also covers the conversion of passenger aircraft to cargo aircraft as well as MMTT conversions. We are pleased to partner with our long-time partner IAI in this MMTT conversion venture which is one of the strategic diversification paths identified by HAL, said HAL CMD, R Madhavan. IAI President and CEO Boaz Levy said in his post, “We are proud to partner with our peers to bring our best MMTT solution to India, while using local resources to manufacture and market the platform. HAL and bringing the conversion directly to India, we support the “Make in India” campaign.
